Crucifixion

I’m Talking Love

There is a scene in the film The Accused where the character played by Jodie Foster dances before a group of beer drinking men in a late night bar. The dance is deliberately provocative and precedes a harrowing rape scene. Collishaw photographed the dance using a camera with a motor-wind and processed the images as 35mm slides. He then projected these stills in rapid succession, which gave the girl the appearance of dancing under a stroboscopic light, much like the subject of an Edward Muybridge sequence. The beam of light from the projector appears to animate the dance as well as lending the scene a fatalistic air as the men’s instinctive and mechanical response takes them over.
